Kan ik naar Thailand dit jaar en waarom kan dat nu nog niet? Die vraag kom ik regelmatig tegen. Op social media en in reacties op TB en andere niets zeggend weblogs..

Alsof dat het belangrijkste is waar je je nu mee bezig moet houden. En het antwoord is: Nee! Nu niet, over drie maanden niet en hoogstwaarschijnlijk over zes maanden ook niet. Klaar.

Ondertussen zijn tot nu toe een miljoen hotelmedewerkers ontslagen tijdens de pandemie. Een ramp voor deze mensen en hun gezinnen in een land waar de sociale voorzieningen niet zo goed geregeld zijn als bij ons. Een financiële, mentale en sociale klap die ook na de beheersing van dit virus nog lang zal nagalmen. Het is nog maar de vraag of je ook volgend jaar naar je favoriete bestemming Thailand kunt. Kan je doen, als het weer mag. Maar verwacht een heel andere vakantie dan je gewend was. Want, een economie naar de haaien, veel gesloten horeca, zichtbare toenemende armoede (voor zover die er al niet was), veel gebedel, gesloten winkels.

 

 

Vakantie en knipbuigende Thai

Daarbij, en dat denk ik zelf, zal de criminaliteit en sociale onrust toenemen. Er is gebrek aan geld, werk en voorzieningen, mensen zijn alles kwijtgeraakt en moeten bij de dag zien te overleven en het vertrouwen in de regering daalt met de dag. Een cocktail waarin agressie naar toeristen de kers op de slagroom is.

Jij krabbelt op na veel ellende en je ziet een stel farang onbekommerd met hun luie reet op het strand of aan het zwembad liggen. In de verwachting dat een vriendelijk glimlachende knipbuigende Thai hun drankje brengt. Dan is het niet raar dat je dan als Thai een rancune krijgt naar de gasten van het hotel of restaurant. Mensen die bij thuiskomst zeggen: ‘Leuke mensen joh, ze lachen daar altijd’.

De eeuwige glimlach

Irritatie is mijn deel wanneer ik weer een bericht voorbij zie komen waarin de teleurstelling eraf spat omdat iemand niet naar zijn ‘geliefde Thailand kan’. Voor veel Thai bestaat er niet eens zoiets als een vakantie van drie weken waar je een dure vlucht neemt naar een oord dat 12.000 kilometer verderop ligt en al die tijd ik weet niet hoeveel geld spendeert aan drank, eten, kopen, uitgaan en bezienswaardigheden bezoeken. Alsof je geluk in het leven afhangt van wel of geen trip naar het land van de glimlach. Waar nu weinig te glimlachen valt.

In the expectation that a friendly, smiling, curvy Thai will bring their drink. Then it is not surprising that as a Thai you get a grudge towards the guests of the hotel or restaurant. People who say when they come home: “Nice people dude, they always laugh there”.

The eternal smile

Irritation is my part when I see another message in which the disappointment splashes off because someone cannot go to his “beloved Thailand”. For many Thai there is not even such a thing as a three week vacation where you take an expensive flight to a place that is 12,000 kilometers away and all the while I don’t know how much money is spent on drinking, eating, buying, going out and sightseeing. As if your happiness in life depends on whether or not a trip to the land of smiles. Where there is now little to smile.
