Toeristen zijn makkelijke prooien voor locals. Ze weten maar weinig van de cultuur, kennen de weg niet en zijn eenvoudig in de val te lokken. De zwendelaars zijn hier buitengewoon gewiekst in en weten vakantiegangers vaak op een hele slinkse wijze in de val te lokken.
VAAK IN BANGKOK
Scam in Thailand komt veel vaker voor dan je denkt. Vooral in Bangkok trappen toeristen dagelijks in de slimme trucs van de doorgewinterde locals. Een van de bekendste manieren om vakantiegangers geld uit hun zakken te troggelen, is door het aanbieden van ritjes in tuk tuks. Vooral in de toeristische gebieden – Nana, Asoke en rond Khao San Road – worden toeristen vaak aangesproken door tuk tuk-chauffeurs.
Voor een lachwekkend laag bedrag – en soms zelfs voor niets – bieden zij de onwetende buitenlanders een ritje voor een uur of langer aan langs allerlei bezienswaardigheden. Klinkt goed, toch? Wat de toeristen niet weten, is dat deze chauffeur in een complot zit. Al gauw merk je dat je langs kleermakers, juwelenwinkels en andere zaken gereden wordt. De chauffeur krijgt namelijk commissie voor mensen die hij daarheen brengt.
Toeristen op weg naar een scam?
Wat nog erger is: als je als toerist daar iets koopt, dan betaal je standaard veel te veel. Bovendien wordt er psychisch zo vakkundig op je ingespeeld, dat je meestal wel overstag gaat om iets te kopen.
Er zijn meer manieren van scam in Thailand. Vaak zijn er taxi- of tuk tuk-chauffeurs die je vertellen dat het Grand Palace (het koninklijk paleis) op die bewuste dag gesloten is. Meestal voeren ze een boeddhistische dag op. Laat je niets wijsmaken: het paleis is iedere dag geopend! Trap hier dus niet in, want zij brengen je weliswaar naar een andere tempel, waar vervolgens weer mannetjes rondlopen die je van alles proberen te verkopen of aan te praten.
PINGPONGSHOWS
Ook de beroemde en beruchte pingpongshows zijn een onderdeel van scam in Thailand. Niet alleen in Bangkok, maar ook in Pattaya en op Phuket worden nieuwsgierige toeristen zo’n tent ingelokt. Zij hebben er veel over gehoord en willen het nu wel eens met eigen ogen aanschouwen. Ze bestellen een drankje en worden tijdens het vragen van de rekening geconfronteerd met een torenhoge rekening, omdat er allerlei ‘cover charges’ bij opkomen.
Vind je het te hoog en weiger je te betalen? Dan word je al gauw omsingeld door een groepje grote Thai. Betalen zul je! Er zijn bedragen bekend van meer dan 25 euro per biertje, ga hier dus niet heen.
JETSKI-SCAM
Als je denkt dat dit alles is wat betreft scam in Thailand… Er komt nog meer zwendel voor. Ben je in Pattaya of op Phuket en loop je over het strand? Gegarandeerd dat je wordt aangesproken door een jetski-verhuurder. Of jij een half uurtje op zijn jetski wilt varen op de zee. Leuk, toch?

Wat veel toeristen niet weten, is dat ook dit zwendel in Thailand is. Er zijn verhalen van huurders die een half uurtje later terug kwamen en ineens geconfrontreerd werden met een schade op de jetski. Terwijl zij niets geraakt hadden onderweg. Toch? De vakantieganger gaat twijfelen aan zichzelf en raakt in discussie met de verhuurder, die een absurd hoog bedrag vraagt als schadevergoeding. Dat kan in de honderden euro’s lopen.
In sommige gevallen biedt de verhuurder aan om de politie erbij te halen. Eerlijk genoeg, zo lijkt het. Maar wat de toerist niet weet, is dat deze agenten ook in het complot zitten en meedelen in de ‘winst’. Als je dus een jetski wilt huren, laat dan van tevoren merken dat je op de hoogte bent van deze oplichtingpraktijken. Loop zelf tien keer om het apparaat heen en maak desnoods foto’s. Geef verder nooit je paspoort af tijdens de verhuur. Een kopie is voldoende.
Onze tip: Thai spreken westerlingen nooit uit zichzelf aan. Doen ze dat wel? Dan is de kans heel erg groot dat ze iets van je willen – geld dus! Bedank vriendelijk en lach daarbij. De bewuste persoon weet dan al genoeg…
