Agressieve apen trekken door de straten van de Thaise stad Lopburi. De dieren hebben honger, nu toeristen wegblijven vanwege corona. Sommige inwoners durven hun deur niet meer uit.
In Lopburi krioelt het van de makaken. Duizenden apen leven er in oude tempels, parken en het centrum van de stad. Toeristen zijn er dol op. Ze voeren de dieren bananen en maken selfies met ze.
Nu de toeristen wegblijven, krijgen de apen minder voedsel. En daar nemen ze geen genoegen mee. Als plunderende bendes trekken ze door de stad.
Vechtende apen
Niet alleen vechten ze met elkaar om voedsel, ze vallen ook inwoners aan. Er zijn zelfs gebieden waar je niet meer heen kunt. Sommige mensen hebben netten over hun terras gehangen, zodat de apen er niet bij kunnen, schrijft de Britse krant The Guardian.
Om ze te kalmeren voeren veel inwoners de dieren nu zelf.
Niet nog meer apen
De afgelopen drie jaar verdubbelde het aantal apen in Lopburi. Er zijn er nu zo’n zesduizend.
De Thaise regering is begonnen om de apen te vangen en te steriliseren. Zodat ze zich de komende jaren niet nog eens verdubbelen!

Aggressive monkeys march through the streets of the Thai city of Lopburi. The animals are hungry, now that tourists are staying away because of corona. Some residents no longer dare to leave their doors.
Lopburi is teeming with macaques. Thousands of monkeys live in ancient temples, parks and the city center. Tourists love it. They feed the animals bananas and take selfies with them.
Now that the tourists are staying away, the monkeys get less food. And they are not satisfied with that. They move through the city like looting gangs.

Not only do they fight each other for food, they also attack inhabitants. There are even areas where you can no longer go. Some people have hung nets over their patios to prevent monkeys from reaching them, writes the British newspaper The Guardian.
To calm them down, many residents now feed the animals themselves.
Not more monkeys
Over the past three years, the number of monkeys in Lopburi has doubled. There are now about six thousand.
The Thai government has begun to trap and sterilize the monkeys. So that they don’t double again in the coming years!
