Het Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) heeft bevestigd dat een Koreaanse man ’van in de vijftig’ is overleden na terugkeer uit Thailand. De man was vier maanden in Thailand geweest. De man werd kort na zijn thuiskomst opgenomen in een ziekenhuis en stierf vorige week woensdag.
Na enkele tests bleek dat de man een infectie met Naegleria fowleri had opgelopen. Deze parasiet ontwikkelt zich vooral in zoetwatermeren of -rivieren. Ook zwemwater dat te weinig chloor bevat is een broeinest voor de micro-organismen. Normaal gesproken voedt een amoebe zichzelf met bacteriën, maar als het in het menselijk lichaam terecht komt, doet het zichzelf graag tegoed aan weefsel. In uiterst zeldzame gevallen kan het ’primaire amoebische meningo-encefalitis’ veroorzaken wanneer water dat de amoebe bevat door de neus stroomt en de hersenen bereikt. De incubatietijd voor Naegleria fowleri is meestal twee tot drie dagen en maximaal 15 dagen. Volgens The Star is een infectie met de amoebe erg zeldzaam. Sinds 2018 zijn in totaal 381 gevallen van Naegleria fowleri over de hele wereld gemeld.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has confirmed that a Korean man ‘in his 50s’ has died after returning from Thailand. The man had been in Thailand for four months. The man was admitted to a hospital shortly after returning home and died last Wednesday.
After some tests, it turned out that the man had contracted an infection with Naegleria fowleri. This parasite mainly develops in freshwater lakes or rivers. Swimming water that contains too little chlorine is also a hotbed for micro-organisms. Normally, an amoeba feeds on bacteria, but when it gets into the human body, it likes to feast on tissue. In extremely rare cases, it can cause ‘primary amoebic meningoencephalitis’ when water containing the amoeba passes through the nose and reaches the brain. The incubation period for Naegleria fowleri is usually two to three days and up to 15 days. According to The Star, an amoeba infection is very rare. As of 2018, a total of 381 cases of Naegleria fowleri have been reported worldwide.
