Naast de schaal met oliebollen en vuurwerk op Oudejaarsavond, duiken we in Nederland massaal de Noordzee in. Is die Nieuwjaarsduik niet helemaal je ding? Dan kun je ook water over elkaar heen gooien tijdens Oud & Nieuw.

Zo start men in onder andere Thailand, Myanmar en Cambodja het nieuwe jaar gereinigd en met een zuivere ziel.

Heb je goede voornemens en wil je onopgeloste vetes nog oplossen voor de jaarwisseling dan ben je in Peru aan het goede adres. Hier gaan ze voor klokslag twaalf uur nog even met elkaar op de vuist om met een frisse start te beginnen.

Leuk feestjurkje? Denk ook aan je ondergoed! 

In veel culturen blijkt je ondergoed tijdens Oud & Nieuw heel belangrijk en de kleur kan je helpen in je missie voor het Nieuwe Jaar. Op zoek naar de ware liefde? Kies dan voor rood. Vrouwen én mannen in Brazilië, Mexico en Turkije zweren erbij. Belangrijk detail: stap wel eerst in je slipje met je rechtervoet!

Is het vooral je gezondheid waar jij je dit komende jaar op toelegt? Dan valt je keuze op wit of blauw ondergoed. En zoek je financieel succes in 2023? Dan is jouw kleur absoluut geel!

Nieuwjaar en je financiële zekerheden

En geen tijd of geld meer voor een nieuw lingeriesetje, maar wil je wel graag je financiële situatie zeker stellen voor 2023? Dan kun je volgens goed Italiaans gebruik dadels eten.

De pit van de eerste dadel die je eet in het nieuwe jaar, dien je (gewassen) in je portemonnee te bewaren. Het zou je zo maar financieel voorspoed kunnen brengen. 

Of doe als de Polen en strek jezelf in een feestelijke outfit en eet een karper. De schubben van de vis bewaar je in je portemonnee. Dit zou goed zijn voor je financiële gesteldheid.

Het geluk een handje helpen? 

Dat scherven geluk brengen wisten we al. De Denen doen daar op Oudejaarsavond graag nog een schepje bovenop. Of beter, hun hele serviesgoed. De hele voorraad tegen de voordeur van hun buren. Brengt het echt geluk of… herrie met de buren?

In Zuid Afrika pakken ze het nog grootser aan en knikkert men bij de jaarwisseling alle oude meubels uit het raam. Niet geheel ongevaarlijk, maar ze beginnen het jaar wel lekker opgeruimd.

Dan pakken de Argentijnen het eens stuk vriendelijker aan. Ook daar gooien ze van alles uit het raam: papiersnippers wel te verstaan van oude documenten. Op die manier laat de Argentijn het oude achter zich en maakt zich op voor een nieuw begin!

Voor de wereldreiziger: zet je koffer alvast klaar!

Last but not least, een gebruik dat ons wereldwijven absoluut aanspreekt is een traditie uit onder andere Mexico en Colombia.

Om klokslag twaalf uur middernacht pak je een volle koffer om een stevige wandeling door de straten te maken. Op die manier zul je een jaar vol avontuurlijke reizen beleven! De moeite van het proberen waard toch?

 

En mocht je je afvragen tot wanneer je elkaar een gelukkig Nieuwjaar mag wensen, dat mag tot 6 januari: Driekoningen. Gelijk ook de dag dat het echt tijd wordt die prachtig versierde kerstboom de deur uit te doen!

In many cultures, your underwear appears to be very important during New Year’s Eve and the color can help you in your mission for the New Year. Looking for true love? Then choose red. Women and men in Brazil, Mexico and Turkey swear by it. Important detail: step into your panties with your right foot first!

Is it mainly your health that you focus on this coming year? Then you can choose white or blue underwear. And are you looking for financial success in 2023? Then your color is definitely yellow!

New Year and your financial securities
And no more time or money for a new lingerie set, but would you like to secure your financial situation for 2023? Then you can eat dates according to good Italian custom.

The pit of the first date you eat in the new year should be kept (washed) in your wallet. It could just bring you financial prosperity.
Or do as the Poles do and stretch out in a festive outfit and eat a carp. You keep the scales of the fish in your wallet. This would be good for your financial health.
Give luck a helping hand?

We already knew that shards bring good luck. The Danes like to add a little extra on New Year’s Eve. Or rather, their entire crockery. The whole stock against their neighbour’s front door. Does it really bring happiness or… noise with the neighbors?

In South Africa they take it even bigger and at the turn of the year all old furniture is thrown out of the window. Not completely harmless, but they start the year nicely tidy.
Then the Argentines take a much friendlier approach. There, too, they throw all sorts of things out the window: shredded paper, that is to say, from old documents. In this way, the Argentinian leaves the old behind and prepares for a new beginning!

For the world traveler: get your suitcase ready!
Last but not least, a custom that absolutely appeals to us world women is a tradition from Mexico and Colombia, among others.

At the stroke of twelve midnight you pack a full suitcase to take a brisk walk through the streets. That way you will experience a year full of adventure travel! Worth a try right?

And if you’re wondering until when you can wish each other a happy New Year, you can do so until January 6: Epiphany. Also the day when it’s really time to get rid of that beautifully decorated Christmas tree!
